Summer Road Trip Ideas in Washington

10 Jul

There’s no better time to pack the car and hit the road with the family then when the sun is shining and the weather is warm. Summer road trips can help you beat the heat and entertain the kids while school is out. But if you don’t want to commit to a cross-country ordeal, a quick weekend trip in Washington can do the trick. It’s a great way to explore our beautiful state and learn about its history and geography. ScenicWA.com has some great trip ideas. We’ve highlighted some below.

1. Maryhill Museum of Art

Maryhill Museum of Art

This art museum features an extensive Native American art collection as well as beautiful views of the Columbia River Gorge. It also features some American and European art including a full-size replica of England’s Stonehenge. If your road trip doesn’t include kids, the Maryhill Winery is just near by.

2. Crawford State Park

Crawford State Park

Get your stalactites and stalagmites on at the limestone cave in Crawford State Park. While its only the 3rd longest limestone cave in WA, its laid out well for large group tours and best of all, the tours are free!

3. Centennial Trail State Park

If you like hiking and biking and learning a little about history, then Centennial Trail State Park might be for you. The trail was named in 1989 in commemoration of Washington state’s 100th birthday. At 37 miles long you won’t run out of open space to explore (or exercise!)

4. Chinook Pass Scenic Byway

Chinook Pass

The Chinook Pass is a gorgeous drive that features a close up view of Mount Rainier in all its glorious beauty. The drive takes you through all kinds of geography including forests, river fronts and desert plains. This is a perfect drive to do in the summer as it takes you over to eastern Washington where you’re guaranteed to have blue skies and warm weather. Parts of the drive are closed during the winter season.
